Mono Lake, California

Mono Lake Geology

By Kevin Menesez

Mono Lake is a special lake. It
is set in the hills and mountains of
the East Sierra Nevada. Mono Lake is
surrounded by volanic landscape. The lake
has been determined to be over 760,000
years old. It is among the oldest lakes
in North America. The Mono Craters
stretch south of Mono Lake. The last
eruption occured less than 700 years
ago in Panum Crater. These volcanic
craters are among the youngest volcanoes
on the North American plate.
Mono Lake covers 14 different ecological
zones. Much of the life has been lost
around Mono Lake though. Ever since
Los Angeles searched for more water
the water level has dropped. You can
see tufa over 40 feet tall in some
places. At one time, this tufa was under
water. Mono Lake has definitely been
through a lot, but it will survive.

This is another picture of Mono Lake. You can tell it has lost a lot of water.

This is a picture of a sign near Mono Lake explaining the salinity of the lake.
