High Plains is a western subdivision of the Great Plains.
Low moisture and high elevation account for great swings in temperature. The world record for greatest 24 hr change occurred in 1916 Montana, 44 down to -56 degrees Fahrenheit.
Economic growth is extremely low. Cattle ranching and wheat, corn and sunflower farming are the main activities in the region. Due to natural resources such as oil, natural gas, wind energy and underground water, certain high plains areas have been able to grow. West Texas is an example of such an area. It has long been industrial with its natural gas and underground water supporting metal ore refining.
